Additional public hearings, extended comment period for Beltrami County Jail project

Additional public hearings are coming next month for comment on the Beltrami County Jail project.

The online portal is now open through the end of October for feedback on the seven options being considered for the future of the Beltrami County jail.

For example, a regional correctional facility could be upwards of $150 million and could be funded by a local-option sales tax, but couldn’t be funded through bonds and would need regional partners.

A local-option sales tax would have to be approved by county voters.

A new Beltrami County Jail would be at least $125 million and could be funded through bonds.

Renovating and expanding the jail are other options, as well as doing nothing, closing the jail, or reducing it to a 36-hour holding facility.

Town Hall meetings are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13, at 5 p.m. in the County Board room, and on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m. during the regular board meeting.

The meetings will be streamed and available to attend virtually.
