Alamano named Violence Free MN award winner

Violence Free Minnesota named United Way of Bemidji Area’s Executive Director Denae Alamano as the 2022 Community Leader Inspire Award winner.

According to a release, Alamano has been in her role for the past six years and has grown the organization through their funding allocations to local nonprofits, development of needed and relevant initiatives, and growth in sustainable programming for the rural area.

Through the Women United group Alamano spearheaded, the capital campaign for the Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter is now underway.

The Shelter is currently in an older four-bedroom house, which does not provide enough space, privacy or choice for the families and people who use the shelter. The shelter also has to turn away almost as many requests for safe shelter as they accommodate, between 500-800 people each year.

“Women United has been our springboard and we are grateful for all who have donated to the project, served on our committees, and supported the project by sharing our story,” said Chris Latzke, executive director of NBWS.

Alamano currently sits on the Shelter’s capital campaign committee. To learn more about the capital campaign, visit www.mnshelter.org/capital-campaign/.
