AUDIO: Ben Lang with MN DNR Forestry highlights drought, fire danger

With burning restrictions in place for much of north-central Minnesota, DNR Forester Ben Lang spoke with us on what we can do to prevent wildfires.

Lang said the area needs between three and five more inches of rain before we get to normal precipitation levels for this time of year.

With the heat and dry weather conditions expected ahead of this weekend, fire danger is expected to increase.

The burning restrictions include a prohibition of fireworks outside of any city limits on private and public lands.

Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood said the City of Bemidji would follow the fireworks prohibition set by the DNR Commissioner.

The Bemidji Jaycees Red, White, and BOOM! Fireworks display, scheduled for Sunday, July 4, at dusk, is a permitted fireworks show.

Lang says there are a number of things citizens can do to prevent fires.
