AUDIO: DNR’s Nathan Kestner discusses Red Lake River flows, Enbridge water permits

The DNR has suspended additional water-related permits for Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline.

According to Minnesota DNR’s Nathan Kestner, the Northwest Regional Manager for the Division of Ecological and Water Resources, low stream flows on the Red Lake River prompted a decision to also restrict surface water appropriation from the Red Lake River watershed.

Work on Line 3 may continue despite these permit suspensions, but at least in the Red Lake River watershed, water appropriation must come from other sources that do not impact surface water.
