Dr. Colleen Swank, the Vice President of Clinics for Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota and Sanford Bemidji pediatrician, joined News Director Larissa Donovan and Assistant News Director Kev Jackson today to discuss news this week that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was placed on a pause.
Swank said the pause is due to six women, between the ages of 18 and 48, developing rare but serious blood clots between six and 13 days after their injection of the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine.
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines take the lion’s share of administered doses, and Swank said these vaccines are available by appointment at Sanford Health.
Swank said those who have already received their vaccines have little to worry about, but women especially who have received the J&J vaccine in the last three weeks should monitor for these blood clot symptoms, which include severe headache. If these symptoms develop, seek care immediately.
