The Brooklyn Center officer killing of Daunte Wright has Governor Tim Walz demanding the legislature hold hearings on police reform measures.
The governor said, “just to be very clear, there is no intention as we stand here today of having a single hearing on a single thing to change this — and that’s simply not acceptable.”
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Warren Limmer says the legislature passed “monumental reforms with strong bipartisan support” last summer.
House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler says this year the House is introducing reforms around body camera use, statute of limitations for wrongful death suits, and an overview of use of force and accountability.
Winkler noted there does seem to be some support in the Republican Senate.
Winkler also said there is some legislation underway to allow cities to opt-in for a civilian police advisory committee with guidelines on their authority.
Bemidji’s City Council has begun a work group to determine the scope of a local policy advisory committee.
