AUDIO: Senator Tina Smith announces “No Surprise Billing” law now in effect

U.S. Senator Tina Smith, the junior senator for Minnesota, announced late last week that a bill she co-sponsored, “No Surprise Billing,” has been in effect since Jan. 1.

Smith says the bill instructs providers, both in health care and in health insurance, to cover the expenses of emergency room visits.

Smith says about one in five Americans who visit an emergency room have been landed with surprise ER bills, often in the several thousand dollar range, because some of the care ordered by medical professionals are not within the patient’s health insurance network.

Smith says there are important provisions for lowering prescription drug costs in the contentious “Build Back Better” plan proposed by the Biden Administration.
