Beltrami County Board discusses lease with AWCL charter school

The Beltrami County Board of Commissioners discussed possibly terminating the three-year lease of the AWCL charter school.

AWCL has leased space in the Beltrami County Health and Human Services building since 2019, recently renewing their previous two-year lease to a three-year lease in July.

The board seemed unanimous in their wish to keep the taxpayer whole, with an estimated $220,000 loss in revenue if the lease is terminated without a new tenant in place.

AWCL Director Anna Wallin expressed that their school is growing and they have an opportunity to expand with a lease elsewhere.

The board voted in the regular meeting to pass a motion to continue negotiations with the charter to find a mutually agreeable solution with the goal to hold the county generally harmless.
