Beltrami County officials approach Congressman Stauber for federal help on jail project

Beltrami County is now also seeking federal assistance for the new county jail.

According to a release, Beltrami County Commissioners, Administrator Tom Barry, Sheriff Jason Riggs and a number of other county staff members met with U.S. Representative Pete Stauber last week.

Stauber reportedly toured the current jail and visited with several County representatives for an hour discussing the numerous issues and challenges with the jail.

“We are very grateful for the time Congressman Stauber spent touring our jail facility and meeting with staff and commissioners,” said Barry.

“His prior service as a 20-year veteran police officer and St. Louis County Commissioner was very beneficial in helping us develop a strategy for moving forward.”

“Representative Stauber’s commitment to law enforcement and his empathy and support for our staff and our challenges was very much appreciated,” added Sheriff Riggs.

Staffing shortages and delayed medical responses are just the latest challenges for the Beltrami County Jail, with the DOC recently ordering a reduction to a 72-bed capacity for the facility.
