Bemidji City Council work session to discuss memorial for Coach Peters, ranked choice voting

The Bemidji City Council will discuss two items in their work session tonight. The first presentation will be from the Coach Peters Memorial Committee, which is an initiative to install a bronze memorial bust of Bemidji State Hockey Coach R. H. “Bob” Peters at the Sanford Center.

The money for the memorial would be raised privately and the bust would be installed in a visible location at the Sanford center as a tribute to Coach Peters.

The second part of the work session will include a presentation for ranked choice voting from FairVote MN Chair Maureen Reed.

The initiative will be brought before the State Legislature this session, and the topic has been discussed at the Bemidji Charter Commission.

Ranked choice voting is an alternative voting system that allows voters to rank multiple candidates in order of preference, and has been adopted in at least 50 jurisdictions across the US, including for statewide and federal elections in Maine and Alaska.
