Bemidji High School Speech Team’s first competition

The Bemidji High School Speech Team had a productive first weekend of competition.

Several veteran speakers traveled to the highly competitive, multi-state Marshall Speech Spectacular Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24 and 25.

Five speakers advanced to quarterfinals, including Elizabeth Rafferty in Extemp Reading, Amy Frenzel in Extemp Speaking, Melanie Richards in Great Speeches and Grace Nelson in Poetry.

Grace Nelson advanced to semifinals with the top quarterfinal personal, but fell just short of finals.

Danielle Gray also competed in first-year Prose, and finished third in that category.

Meanwhile, the remainder of the team competed with 20 other teams at the Lucky Lindy Invitational in Little Falls on Jan. 25, with Savannah Haugen advancing to Finals in Great Speeches, and Maya Lindquist advancing in Original Oratory.

The team travels to Grand Rapids tomorrow night for a rare weeknight makeup event.
