Ernest Joseph “Joey” Oppegaard-Peltier III is planning a bid for Congressional District 8.
Oppegaard-Peltier originally announced an intention to run for Congressional District 7, but after redistricting maps were released last month, gears were shifted for Minnesota’s Eighth.
Oppegaard-Peltier is focusing a Democratic campaign on such items as Medicare for All, legalization of recreational marijuana, and expanding Social Security.
Oppegaard-Peltier is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in North Dakota and has lived in the Bemidji area for a number of years with his husband, Tyler.
Now that CD8 includes every Ojibwe reservation in the state of Minnesota, Oppegaard-Peltier believes this is the time to champion Indigenous interests, such as expanding green energy in tribal economies.
