Bemidji Mayor announces candidacy for state Senate

Bemidji Mayor Rita Albrecht has announced her candidacy for state senate. Albrecht is running for the Senate District 5 seat, currently held by Republican Justin Eichorn.

“I’m running because we need a leader who will work for a brighter future for our region – for our children, our environment, our employers and workers, and those who feel marginalized,” said Albrecht in a release. I want to use my experience as mayor to stand up for greater economic security for our families, neighbors, and communities in Senate District 5.”

Senate District 5 includes portions of Beltrami, Cass and Itasca counties. Albrecht is seeking the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party’s endorsement for the district.

Charles Dolson is also seeking the DFL endorsement. Dolson, according to a release, is a former police officer, a current corporate attorney and an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa.

Albrecht will hold a campaign kick-off event tomorrow evening at Brigid’s Pub in Bemidji, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
