BHS Speech Team first place at Hibbing

The Bemidji High School Speech Team was the champion out of 22 teams at the Hibbing Heartbreaker invitational tournament Saturday.

Amy Frenzel was first place in both Extemp Speaking and Original Oratory, Elizabeth Rafferty took home a first place medal in Extemp Reading and Melanie Richards was champion in Great Speeches and also placed in Drama.

Other medalists include Maya Lindquist, second place in Original Oratory, Danielle Gray, medalist in both Prose and Creative Expression, Orion Montgomery and Evelyn Cordts medaled in Extemp Reading, Grace Nelson medaled in Poetry, Tristan Hamann medaled in Informative and Savannah Haugen medaled in Great Speeches.

Several students will compete in East Grand Forks this Friday, and the entire team will compete again next week for the Lumberjack Invitational here in Bemidji.


Larissa Donovan is the News Director for the stations of Paul Bunyan Broadcasting and has been, almost without interruption, since Election Day 2016. She covers events and issues in north central Minnesota, which include local government, crime, courts, education, environment and social issues. She studied communications at Bemidji State University and received her degree in 2018. Larissa is also an active member with the Bemidji Jaycees, a leadership development through community service organization for adults 18 to 40. Larissa, native to the great state of New York, grew up in Bemidji, and enjoys spending her spare time with her growing family and pet cat. She also loves Star Trek, punk rock music and the theater.
