The body of a Moorhead man was recovered from a Becker County lake yesterday.
According to a release from Sheriff Todd Glander, his office was notified of a man not resurfacing Saturday afternoon after struggling to swim out from a Detroit Lakes beach.
Twenty-four-year-old Abdimajid Osman Nur was on the lake in an inflatable canoe when he went swimming in the lake and began to struggling to swim. When a family member attempted to rescue Nur from the water, the canoe capsized, and Nur reportedly went under the surface shortly thereafter.
Upon the initial 911 call, officers from the Detroit Lakes Police Department, Becker County Sheriff’s Office, Becker County Dive Team, MN DNR, Clay County and the Minnesota State Patrol were dispatched. Initial efforts that Saturday and the following Sunday were unsuccessful.
After a two-day search, divers located Nur in approximately 12 feet of water Monday afternoon.
Searches were conducted on the water by Side-Scan, Down Imaging sonar, and with trained K-9s, from the air by plane and drone, and by divers in the water. Members of the public also assisted with a night search with fishing boats equipped with Sonar and large lights.
The family of Nur wishes to express their deep heartfelt thank you to the community of Detroit Lakes and Becker County for their support and assistance with searches as well as donations of food, seating and beverages.
