Cass Lake man pleads not guilty to murder of 4-year-old

A Cass Lake man entered a not guilty plea yesterday in Itasca County, on second-degree murder charges relating to the death of his girlfriend’s four-year-old son.

According to the criminal complaint, 29-year-old Kevin Daniel Jackson and the boy’s mother were using methamphetamine the night before Aug. 21, 2019.

The boy’s mother told police she found her son on the couch in her home in Inger, wrapped in blankets and his lips were blue.

Paramedics found the boy unresponsive and were unable to revive him. His injuries were reportedly consistent with strangulation.

Jackson’s trial is set for early June in Itasca County, with a pre-trial date set for the end of this month.

Inger is a village about 56 miles east of Bemidji, on the Leech Lake reservation, northeast of Lake Winnibigoshish.
