City Council hears numerous comments in meeting Monday

The Bemidji City Council received numerous comments during its meeting Monday.

Former council members Nancy Erickson, Michael Meehlhause, Reed Olson, Dan Jourdain, and former Mayor Rita Albrecht were among those who questioned the direction of leadership.

These comments touched on a wide range of issues, from the rental ordinance to how committees are assigned.

During the last meeting where a motion to discuss the “continued employment of the city manager” was added to the agenda, the motion was ultimately tabled for two weeks pending further legal review of the employment contract and the city charter.

Legal counsel from Flaherty and Hood has since advised that this language was not appropriate in the motion, and Mayor Jorge Prince said he should have been listening more carefully at that meeting to not allow it, rather the “discussion on scheduling a date” for the city manager’s performance evaluation.

City Manager Nate Mathew’s annual performance evaluation will be held at the end of March.
