City of Bemidji and Northern Township to continue discussion on water and sewer

The Bemidji City Council will hold a special meeting Monday to further discuss water and sewer infrastructure along the northern side of Lake Bemidji.

Northern Township is seeking to extend municipal services to Ruttger’s Birchmont Lodge and possibly beyond but without further annexation.

Bemidji and Northern Township completed a 20-year-old orderly annexation agreement in 2020, and the two entities have since announced a dissolution of the Greater Bemidji Area Joint Planning Board.

The need for municipal services at Ruttger’s Birchmont Lodge arose over a year ago when the resort requested orderly annexation as the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency was monitoring the failing septic system.

Ruttger’s recently paid a $13,000 fine after a number of extensions.
