City work session to further discuss Northern Township infrastructure proposal

The Bemidji City Council tonight will further discuss a proposal to extend City Sewer and Water up Bemidji Avenue where Ruttger’s Birchmont Lodge’s septic is failing.

Northern Township received a $5 million federal grant to construct infrastructure around the north side of Lake Bemidji.

The township is offering to invest significant funds and pay a premium to use city utilities without annexation.

City staff has numerous concerns with the proposal, such as water main breaks, power outages, and legal concerns such as deviating from the long-standing policy of not allowing connection without annexation, as well as the possibility of residents wanting to detach and pay the Township premium.
