Coronavirus Wipes Out A Number Of Area Events

A number of area events set for this weekend are the first coronavirus or covid related closings in the north country.

The Shamrock Shuffle scheduled for March 14th at Sanford Center has been postponed. As of now, they are planning for a fall St. Patty’s Day celebration, as of now set for September 26th.

Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College are extending spring break for a week. It will now run through March 22nd. All other events or gatherings of more than 100 people have been cancelled through at least May 1st.

Bemidji State’s WCHA semi-final series at Sanford Center against Bowling Green this weekend has been cancelled, and in fact, the entire NCAA tournament has been cancelled.

The Spring Sipper sponsored by First City Liquor at Sanford Center Saturday has been cancelled.

Among the events affected are the State Basketball tournaments, as well as Section tourneys. The Red Lake Girls lost the State quarterfinal to Minneota and then found out they wouldn’t get a second game at the state tournament as the MSHSL decided to cancel the consolation rounds of the event. It was also determined that a very limited amount of people would be in the venues for the remainder of the state girls basketball tournament and all of the State Boys Basketball Tournament next week.

Nevis and Cass Lake-Bena Boys Basketball teams are affected by the Section restrictions. Only the team players, coaches, game officials, credentialed media, and a small amount of school approved fans will be allowed at the Section championship games. Cass Lake- Bena will face Ada-Borup in Thief River Falls, while Nevis takes on Hinckley-Finlayson at Crosby-Ironton.
