The Beltrami County Board of Commissioners has a full agenda tonight, with viewing options available on YouTube as well as in person at the Beltrami Administration Building.
At 6 p.m., the board will hold a public hearing on the 2023 Budget and Levy.
The Board of Commissioners will also discuss a resolution requesting a local option sales tax to fund a new jail in their work session at 3 p.m.
In a memo, County Administrator Tom Barry writes that the ballot question to voters could come in the 2023 General Election with the state legislature’s pre-approval.
In the application for a local option sales tax, the estimated project cost for a new jail is $80 million, and the total maximum estimated tax would be around $170 million over 30 years, which would support bond financing up to $90 million.
The Minnesota Department of Corrections has issued a requirement for the county to upgrade its Jail to resolve inmate overcrowding issues, and the board recently elected to construct a new 242-bed facility.
