DNR receives proposal for a new nickel mine in northern Minnesota

The Minnesota DNR announced a new proposal for a mine in Aitkin County.

The Tamarack Nickel Mine proposal from Talon Metals LLC would construct an underground mine about a mile and a half north of Tamarack.

The project, according to a release, would have an 80-acre footprint that would include an access portal, temporary storage for ore and waste rock, and facilities to collect and treat water.

The proposer would mine ore-bearing rock with nickel and other precious metals between 500 to 2,00 feet below the surface, transporting the rock by rail to Mercer County, North Dakota.

Disposal of waste tailings would also be in Mercer County.

The project will require an environmental impact statement, which the DNR says is a separate and independent process that guides permitting.

More information about the project is available on a DNR webpage.
