Challenge of Climate Change

The Deep Portage Learning Center in Hackensack is co-hosting a forum on climate change.

According to a release, the day-long forum on Oct. 8 is titled “The Challenge of Climate Change in Northern Minnesota,” and will include a keynote address, a panel of local leaders on forests, and a guided tour of alternative energy installations at Deep Portage.

The keynote speaker is Jessica Hellmann, Ph.D., a nationally-recognized scholar and leader in climate change and climate change adaptation research.

The panel of forestry leaders includes: Meredith Cornett, Ph.D, Forestry Specialist with the Duluth office of The Nature Conservancy; Keith Karnes, Forestry Director for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe; and Mark Gossman, professional forester and Cass County Land Commissioner.

Norm Moody, B.A., M.F., member of the Deep Portage Foundation Board of Directors and former Cass County Land Commissioner will lead the guided tour of Deep Portage.

The Cass County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America co-hosts the event.

Doors open at 9 a.m. with several local profit and nonprofit businesses and organizations on site with information about climate change-related services.

Registration is due on Oct. 1 with a $10 fee.

The fee is waived for those under the age of 21 and college students.
