Lake-loving volunteers across Minnesota are needed to participate in the annual “Starry Trek,” a search for starry stonewort, on Aug. 20.
Starry stonewort is an aggressive, aquatic invasive algae that can spread easily and grows into dense mats at and below the lake’s surface.
Starry Trek volunteers will be trained to identify aquatic invasive species and then branch out to local water accesses to search for signs of invasive species.
Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and no experience or equipment is necessary to participate.
There are currently 26 local training sites including one at Big Turtle Public Water Access.
