Beltrami County Environmental Services is hosting a local “Starry Trek” location. The annual “Starry Trek” is organized by the University of Minnesota which focuses on searching for one of Minnesota’s newest aquatic invasive species, starry stonewort.
Starry stonewort is an invasive algae first found in Lake Koronis in 2015 and has spread to 14 Minnesota lakes.
According to Beltrami County Aquatic Invasive Species Lake Technician Bruce Anspach, of the 14 Minnesota Lakes this invasive algae is found, Beltrami County is home to six of them.
“Prevention and early detection is our only way to effectively manage starry stonewort.”
Participants will help search for the invasive algae, no experience is necessary and the event is free and family friendly. Registration is available at starrytrek.org until August 7, with the event taking place on August 15.
The event’s protocols have been modified to accommodate COVID-19 guidelines.
