Former Mayor Rita Albrecht appointed to Bemidji Charter Commission

The Bemidji Charter Commission met for the fourth month in a row ahead of their required annual meeting next month.

Marty Cobenais has approached the Beltrami County Board of Commissioners and the Bemidji City Council on establishing a code of conduct required for local candidates and elected officials; particularly, that they pass a criminal background check.

The Charter Commission heard a portion of Cobenais’ presentation before the timer went off.

A code of conduct/conflicts of interest portion was also on their agenda.

Further discussion on those topics is anticipated at the meeting next month.

The Charter Commission also had a back-and-forth conversation with City Clerk Michele Miller on the redistricting process.

The Charter Commission is discussing a possible change to the makeup of the council before the next redistricting process in ten years.

Miller inquired about the possibility of changing the city’s process of establishing ward boundaries by resolution versus by ordinance, which would take less time.

Former Bemidji Mayor Rita Albrecht will replace C.T. Marhula on the Charter Commission, with her term beginning next month.

Char Blashill was reappointed to another term on the Charter Commission.
