Gov. Tim Walz to announce new vaccine incentives today

Gov. Tim Walz is planning to announce initiatives for Minnesotans to get their COVID-19 shots.

Some states, particularly Ohio, have offered a lottery for both cash and a free-ride to college, but it appears Gov. Walz is going in a different direction.

According to a release, 100,000 Minnesotans who get their vaccine between Memorial Day weekend and the end of June will be able to choose an incentive, ranging from state park passes and fishing licenses to fair and amusement park tickets.

These initiatives are part of the “Your Shot to Summer” campaign.

The goal of the campaign is to have 70 percent of Minnesotans, over the age of 16, vaccinated against COVID-19.

More than 2.5 million Minnesotans have completed their COVID-19 vaccine series.

About 61 percent of Minnesotans 12 and older have received at least one dose, with 52 percent of the total population of the state at least beginning the series.

In Beltrami County, about 55 percent of the 16+ population have started their vaccine series.

Clearwater County is reporting 43 percent, Cass County is reporting 49 percent, and Hubbard County is reporting 46 percent.

Gov. Walz’s announcement is expected around 2 p.m., at a Minnesota State Park.
