Juvenile kayakers rescued from Leech Lake

In a series of incidents the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to over the weekend, three juvenile kayakers were rescued from Leech Lake Saturday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Tom Burch, the three girls were caught in the wind and were taking on water, just west of Minnesota Island.

One of the girls was in the water for several minutes, with the two others in partially submerged kayaks unable to paddle to safety.

Ultimately, the three were rescued, and Sheriff Burch notes that the water temperature was around 45 degrees, and that the safe outcome of this incident was the use of life jackets by all three girls.

The three were treated on scene by North Memorial Ambulance and released to an adult.
