Lake George man deemed a fugitive of justice, facing extradition to Iowa for a kidnapping charge

A Lake George man was arrested near Bemidji Saturday night.

According to the criminal complaint, 44-year-old Luke Schendel is wanted in Iowa for kidnapping, a Class B felony.

Schendel was charged in Beltrami County Monday as a fugitive of justice, also a felony.

According to the criminal complaint from Buchanan County, Iowa, law enforcement responded to a call from a man who said he was kidnapped and was in the back of a horse trailer on Sept. 8.

The complaint says Schendel was upset with the victim regarding the purchase of some horses.

The victim entered the trailer to look at the horses, and as he was inside, Schendel allegedly locked the trailer and began driving to another nearby location.

As the trailer slowed down, the victim was able to escape and call authorities.

Schendel apparently told the victim, “You’re either going to pay me or you’re going back to Minnesota.”

The Beltrami County criminal complaint states that Schendel will be returned to Iowa to face charges through the interstate requisition, or extradition, process.

This involves the State of Iowa filing a requisition warrant to the Governor of Minnesota for the defendant’s return to Iowa.

The arrest warrant from Iowa was issued Sept. 29.
