Leech Lake Tribal Police Department apprehends suspect in violent incident

A fugitive is now in custody after a stand-off that lasted several hours in Bena.

According to a release from the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, officers responded to a report of a person who was assaulted and held against their will at gunpoint throughout the evening hours of Thursday, Nov. 19.

The suspect had fled from the residence near Bena prior to officers’ arrival.

Officers received another report a short time later of a male who had barricaded himself inside a nearby garage.

After several hours of negotiations, law enforcement was able to apprehend the suspect, Justin Cutbank, who already had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Some officers received minor injuries during the apprehension.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, MN BCA, and the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office assisted throughout the incident.
