Minnesota Department of Health releases first-ever “Homeless Mortality Report”

The Minnesota Department of Health recently released a study that analyzed health outcomes for people who experience homelessness.

The study proves a long-held observation that Minnesotans experiencing homelessness had higher incidents of poor health.

The Minnesota Homeless Mortality Report 2017-2021 summarizes data from the first systematic look at people experiencing homelessness who die in Minnesota, in partnership with the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institution.

The study found people experiencing homelessness had a death rate three times as high as the general population, regardless of age, gender or race.

MDH Commissioner Brooke Cunningham says this study can be used as a baseline for measuring progress toward reducing health disparities.
