New exhibit at the Beltrami County Historical Museum highlights women in winter sports

The Beltrami County Historical Society’s first special exhibit of 2022 will feature women athletes in various team and individual winter sports.

The exhibit is open now through mid-March and displays hundreds of artifacts donated and on loan from Beltrami County women athletes and their families.

The exhibit highlights women’s contributions and achievements across a variety of sports, including basketball, biathlon, cheerleading, cross-country skiing, curling, downhill skiing, figure skating, fishing, hockey, Nordic skating, sled dog racing, and speed skating.

“Women represented here include state record holders, world champions, and Olympians – whose discipline, teamwork, experience, and determination not only earned title and acclaim, but broke barriers and laid foundations for the future women athletes, scholars, and leaders in our community” said Executive Director Emily Thabes.

“The artifacts share an evolving history of women’s sports from a variety of perspectives. We are honored to highlight these women’s stories and accomplishments in their respective arenas.”

A mini-exhibit is also on display at the Tourist Information Center as of today.

Sponsors of this exhibit include Sanford Bemidji Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Women Anglers of Minnesota, and L&M Fleet Supply.
