Over 70 protesters were cited and one was arrested during a protest commemorating the 30th anniversary of a Line 3 pipeline oil spill near Grand Rapids.
According to a release from Giniw Collective, over 1.7 million gallons of oil spilled after a rupture of the line on March 3, 1991.
“The 1991 oil spill flowed into Prairie River, a tributary of the Mississippi that flows into the river near its sensitive headwaters. Oil made it half a mile away from the Mississippi, but the thick sheet of ice covering the Prairie River stopped the oil from flowing further,” said the release.
The Lakehead Pipeline Co. owned Line 3 at that time and built the line in the 1960s.
Enbridge says they are using state-of-the-art technology to create a safe pipeline along a different route.
