Prescribed burn near Walker in Chippewa National Forest today

The Chippewa National Forest announced a prescribed fire is scheduled to start as early as today at the Tanglewood Unit 2.

This 30-acre prescribed burn will be about 6 miles south of Walker, east of Highway 371 and north of the Woodtick Trail.

The planned activity will lower the potential for wildfires by reducing hazardous fuel loads, and prescribed fire restores a once-occurring natural process for the local ecosystems that rely on fire-adapted plants and trees.

While crews are on location, columns of smoke may be visible from a long distance and smoke may cross over roadways.

Prescribed burns are conducted under specific weather conditions, taking into consideration temperature, humidity and wind.
