Public meetings on Beltrami County CWD this week

The DNR will hold two public meetings this week to discuss Chronic Wasting Disease in Beltrami County.

According to a release, officials from the DNR, the Board of Animal Health, and the U of M Center for Prion Research and Outreach will be on hand to present information and answer questions on CWD.

The always-fatal disease that affects cervids in the deer and elk family was discovered on a Beltrami County deer farm.

Officials also determined that the farmer illegally dumped CWD-infected carcasses off-site on the tax-forfeited parcel.

Earlier this summer, the DNR constructed a perimeter fence around the affected parcel where CWD prions were detected.

One meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bemidji High School commons area.

The second meeting will be held at the Kelliher High School commons Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m.
