Red Lake man pleads guilty to assault

A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty in a federal court for an assault with serious bodily injury on the Red Lake Reservation.

District of Minnesota U.S. Attorney Andy Luger said that in March 2022, Devin Sumner and his victim were in a relationship at one point.

Sumner became angry with the victim and began to assault them, eventually using a 12-gauge shotgun as a blunt object to hit the victim.

The victim sustained serious bodily injuries that required emergency hospital treatment and eventual surgery.

Sumner will be sentenced in June.

The Red Lake Police Department and the FBI Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force conducted the investigation.
