Red Lake man sentenced to 16 years in federal prison for sexual assault

A Red Lake man was sentenced to over 16 years in federal prison for sexual assault.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger says a jury found 38-year-old Descart Begay, Jr., guilty on two counts of aggravated sexual abuse and two counts of sexual abuse.

The trial last fall found that in July 2020, Begay knowingly raped and sexually assaulted a victim in her home until she was able to escape.

The Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the FBI Headwaters Safe Trails Task Force conducted the investigation. Following his 16-year prison sentence, Begay will spend an additional five years on supervised release.
