Red Lake man sentenced to nearly 20 years for rape

A Red Lake man was sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for a violent rape nearly two years ago.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 30-year-old Paul Sayers picked up a victim who was walking down the road.

Instead of driving her to her destination, he drove her to a camper near a hemp shop he worked at.

When she resisted his advances he strangled her until she passed out and then raped her.

She then walked 20 miles back into town.

Sayers also admitted to the sexual assault of another person at his plea hearing in April.

The Red Lake Police Department, the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension conducted the investigation.

Sayers was sentenced to 239 months in a federal prison for aggravated sexual assault.
