Red Lake Nation steps towards blood quantum abolishment

RED LAKE– The Red Lake Tribal Council passed a resolution Tuesday that would grant every Red Lake Nation member enrolled in 1958 full blood quantum status.

According to the release, this would make membership into the Band more inclusive, as members currently need one-quarter Red Lake ancestry to enroll.

The release says that this is the first step in abolishing blood quantum standards, with Secretary Sam Strong stating “we need to continue to visit this enrollment issue until we can come to a consensus to end our current practice of mathematical genocide.”

Enrollment applications for potential members who may now qualify are due in mid-January. More information is available at their website.
