Red Lake officer slain in the line of duty identified

Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting death of a Red Lake Tribal Police Officer.

According to the RLPD, officers responded to a residence early Tuesday morning on a report of a suicidal male in a home with children possibly inside.

The suspect then opened fire on the officers and 37-year-old Ryan Bialke was struck.

He was transported to Red Lake IHS where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect fled into the woods, where he was apprehended a short time later.

The unnamed suspect is in custody pending federal charges.

Officer Bialke was a six-year veteran of the department and leaves behind a wife and four children.

Officer Bialke’s body was escorted to Anoka County Tuesday, with numerous law enforcement and first responding agencies across the state assisting with the escort.

Statements of condolences for the Bialke family and the Red Lake Nation were issued across the state, including by the Beltrami and Clearwater County Sheriff’s Offices, the Bemidji Police Department, the Bemidji Fire Department, the Bemidji Ambulance Service, State Representative Matt Grossell, and U.S. Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach.
