Redistricting switches up districts in northern Minnesota

The state’s courts have released the redistricting maps, and many things have flipped around for much of Northern Minnesota.

Congressional District 8 now extends further west, including Bemidji and the White Earth Nation.

CD 8 also includes every Ojibwe reservation in the state with these new maps.

“It has been an honor to serve the current constituents of Minnesota’s 8th district and I look forward to continuing to serve them in the coming months,” wrote current 8th District Congressman Pete Stauber.

“Moving forward, I welcome the opportunity in 2023 to serve residents of Minnesota’s new 8th district and continue championing our way of life while pushing back against Washington’s runaway spending, skyrocketing inflation, nonsensical calls to defund our police, and Joe Biden’s continued assault on our small businesses and the middle class.”

The state’s legislative districts also switched around.

Bemidji is now in State House District 2A, which also includes the Red Lake Reservation, Baudette, and portions of Clearwater, Beltrami and Lake of the Woods counties.

State House 2B now includes the Leech Lake and White Earth Reservations, and portions of Hubbard, Becker, Clearwater, and Cass counties.

Some of southern Cass and most of Hubbard Counties are now in Senate District 5, with some of Cass County also in Senate District 6.

A five-judge panel was appointed by the Minnesota Supreme Court last year to oversee this redistricting process, which occurs every 10 years after the Census count.

As the 2022 election cycle looms closer, this news may upend some local campaigns for Congress.

Now counties and cities will begin their local redistricting process ahead of the state’s primary day in August.
