The Minnesota DNR will reopen its campgrounds at state parks, forests and recreation areas starting June 1.
Both public and private campgrounds can reopen beginning June 1, if they create a preparedness plan and follow the state’s campground guidelines.
These guidelines, according to the website, include closing common spaces and services, such as amphitheaters, visitor centers, playgrounds, group centers and other congregating sites within parks. Another guidelines covers the capacity and cleaning of facilities.
Facilities such as multi-stall bathroom and shower buildings may be limited to one person or household at a time. Hand air dryers will be taped off or disconnected, and paper towels may be provided instead.
The DNR anticipates about 20-30 campgrounds within state parks, recreation areas and forests will be ready by June 1, with limited services.
Another 20-30 campgrounds and lodging facilities will be open by June 8, the rest of the remote campsites as well as many of its contact/ranger stations.
Showers may not be available at all parks by June 1, but the DNR plans to reopen all of their campgrounds with services by June 15.
The Mary Gibbs Cafe at Itasca State Park may also be open by this date.
As of today, the DNR has opened 75 remote campsites within state parks and forests for Memorial Day Weekend, but most of which had existing reservations. Another 80 remote sites are expected to be ready by May 29.
