Spring thaw flooding possible

With the considerable snowpack across the region, with several inches of new snow this past week, Beltrami County officials are warning of the possibility of flooding with the rapid warmup forecasted in the next week.

Temperatures are predicted from unseasonably cool to seasonably warm, initiating the spring thaw fairly rapidly. Overnight temperatures are forecasted to remain above freezing, which is not conducive for a thaw-freeze-thaw cycle.

Low-lying, poor drainage and flood-prone areas could see water pooling until soils absorb the water.

Community members with basements, lower-level walkout/entry or have historically experienced flooding should take mitigating actions now, such as clearing drainage areas and checking sump pumps.

Drivers are reminded to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” if they encountered flooded roadways, as the road might be washed out. If roads are marked as closed, do not drive around the barriers.
