Suspect in apparent attempted kidnappings apprehended

The suspect in two apparent attempted kidnappings was taken into custody Friday a few hours after a press release from the Bemidji Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to Birch Lane around 1 p.m. Thursday on the report of an attempted abduction.

Officers spoke with two women who said when they were walking on the lane and were approached by a man.

In these separate instances, the male grabbed and held each of them against a vehicle parked on the street.

The male let them go after they had screamed and continued north onto the Bemidji State campus near 19th Street.

Surveillance footage from the campus was provided to officers which aided in identifying the suspect.

Twenty-five-year-old Jonathan Staples of Cass Lake was ultimately apprehended Friday and makes his first court appearance today.

Staples is facing charges of two gross misdemeanor counts of harassment.
