Tribal flag-raising ceremony at City Hall tonight

The Bemidji City Council will host tribal officials and veterans from three nearby tribal nations during the flag-raising ceremony at City Hall this evening.

The ceremony will include a welcome invocation, prayer, drum song, and flag song, with the flag presentation handled by veterans from Red Lake, Leech Lake and White Earth.

Addresses will come from Mayor Jorge Prince, White Earth Chairman Michael Fairbanks, Red Lake Chairman Darrell Seki, Sr., and Leech Lake Chairman Faron Jackson, Sr.

The hour-long event will begin at 5 p.m.

The Bemidji City Council will also hold another public hearing on the city’s rental code.

Amendments to this code as written aim at preserving more housing, such as one unit being closed down due to safety or other issues, not an entire building.

At the last second reading of these amendments, the council held a considerable amount of discussion on changing occupancy limits from one family or four unrelated adults in a unit, to an occupancy limit based on square foot measurements of the units.

After the second reading is accepted, the amendments would go to a final reading before being published.
