Woman OK after kayak capsized

DETROIT LAKES– A Minneapolis woman is fine after capsizing her kayak on a very windy Big Detroit Lake yesterday.

According to a release from the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, they and several other responders arrived on the scene around 4 in the afternoon, after a report of a person trying to swim near the capsized kayak.

The woman, 34-year-old Veronica Surges, said she hit a wave, capsized, and lost her paddle, unable to retrieve it due to windy conditions, which blew her further away from shore.

Surges was wearing a lifejacket and a wetsuit, and was transported to a hospital where she was treated and released.
