Ward 2 Council member resigns

The council member for Ward 2 has announced his resignation.

According to a release, Mike Beard, who was sworn in for the position last year after winning an election against Jamie Thibodeaux in 2018, is resigning due to health reasons.

“It is with sadness that I am announcing my resignation effective immediately from the Bemidji City Council. Due to health reasons involving stress and a family history of heart disease, including my father having 3 heart attacks before age 65, I feel it would be prudent for me to end my tenure. I have enjoyed serving Ward 2 citizens with zeal and passion and appreciate the encouragement and support I have received from the community,” said Beard in a statement.

Since there are about three years left in Beard’s term, the city will likely go forward with a special election.

In 2017, when Ward 4 council member Reed Olson resigned to assume his role as Beltrami County Commissioner, a special election was held to fill his remaining term of two years.

This is a developing story.  Check back for updates.
