Beltrami County Environment Services Director Brent Rud encourages residents to avoid flushing napkins, tissues, flushable wipes, paper towels and other paper products down the toilet.
According to a release, the news of COVID-19 led to a lot of panic buying and hoarding of bath tissue in the county, with some buying more than they could use for many months, leaving others with none.
“These other types of paper products will not break down like toilet paper and can cause backups in your plumbing, resulting in sewage backing up into your house,” said Rud.
“They can also cause pumps to fail requiring expensive fixes, especially if it happens before the ground is thawed. They may also make maintaining your septic system more expensive later on.”
