Beltrami County Commissioners discuss Birchmont Beach Road

By: News Director Larissa Donovan

BEMIDJI– The Beltrami County Board of Commissioners reviewed a feasibility study on County State Aid Highway 20, or Birchmont Beach Road.

The Highway Department has this highway on its five year plan, but it may be pushed to further down on the department’s priority list.

The commissioners and County Engineer Bruce Hasbargen discussed some of the issues of the road, with its heavy bicycle and pedestrian traffic to the State Park and those going around Lake Bemidji.

The feasibility study looked at widening the road and adding shoulder, and another option looks to narrow the road and add a bicycle trail.

No action was taken by commissioners during yesterday’s meeting, and Hasbargen is looking to see if other agencies, such as the city or the DNR, would look to partner in the reconstruction by adding sewer and water around that portion of the Lake.
