BEMIDJI– One was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving yesterday morning after a pursuit through Bemidji.

According to a release from Chief of Police Mike Mastin, officers received a report of a reckless vehicle that nearly caused a head-on collision just after midnight yesterday.

An officer found the car at 15th Street and Bemidji Avenue and attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled south on Bemidji Avenue, in the center turn lane at speeds up to 60 miles per hour.

As the car approached the Mississippi River Bridge, the driver veered into the northbound lane, then a Beltrami County Sheriff’s Deputy used a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit.

Sixty-nine-year-old Joel Baumann of Bemidji was arrested after evaluation of his injuries at the Sanford Hospital.
